Safe, gentle and evidence-informed care throughout your IVF journey
Going through IVF can be one of the most emotionally and physically demanding experiences in life. Acupuncture offers a calm, supportive space to help your body and mind navigate each stage of the process — from early preparation to embryo transfer and beyond.
At my Brighton & Hove acupuncture clinic, I provide personalised treatments designed to complement your fertility care — reducing stress, supporting circulation, and helping you feel grounded, hopeful, and more in tune with your body.
Meet Jo Darling — IVF Acupuncture Specialist in Brighton & Hove
With over 15 years of clinical experience, I specialise in supporting women and couples undergoing IVF and other assisted reproductive treatments. My research on acupuncture and IVF outcomes was published in the Journal of Chinese Medicine and continues to inform my approach today.
I combine the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern, evidence-based practice to create safe, individualised care through every stage of IVF. My treatments focus on restoring balance, easing stress, and promoting the best possible environment for implantation and wellbeing.
I understand how emotional IVF can be, and I’m always happy to talk things through — whether you’re preparing to start or already mid-cycle. You can book a new patient appointment or arrange a free 15-minute consultation to explore how acupuncture may support you. Book here.
How Acupuncture Fits into the IVF Process
Acupuncture can support your body through each phase of IVF. Every plan is personalised, but treatments often align with key moments in your cycle:
-
Early preparation (3–6 months before IVF): helps regulate hormones, improve sleep, and support the health of eggs and sperm, which take around 90 days to mature.
-
Down-regulation: supports the body as it adjusts to hormonal changes and promotes calm.
-
Stimulation phase: encourages healthy blood flow to the ovaries and uterus while easing stress.
-
Egg collection: supports recovery, reduces tension, and can also help boost sperm energy when both partners receive treatment.
-
Pre- and post-embryo transfer: acupuncture before and after transfer has been shown in research to help relax the uterus and promote circulation to the endometrium, creating an optimal environment for implantation.
-
Two-week wait: helps maintain calm and emotional stability during what can feel like the longest stage.
The most widely used treatment approach is the Paulus Protocol, developed for IVF transfers. My extensive experience with this method — alongside the insights from my published research — allows me to adapt each session to your needs with both care and precision.
Early Pregnancy and Beyond
If you become pregnant after IVF, acupuncture can continue to support you in early pregnancy. It can help ease nausea, regulate energy, and offer reassurance through what can be an anxious time — especially if you’ve experienced loss or difficulty in the past.
Emotional and Physical Support
IVF can stir a complex mix of emotions — hope, anxiety, excitement, and exhaustion. Acupuncture provides a place to rest, breathe, and let go.
Many of my patients describe treatments as a sanctuary in their week — helping them sleep better, feel calmer, and manage the ups and downs of IVF more gently. Physically, acupuncture may also help ease bloating, tension, or fatigue caused by hormonal medication.
In addition to in-clinic sessions, I can teach you simple acupressure points and relaxation techniques to continue the benefits at home.
FAQs
When should I start acupuncture before IVF?
Ideally 3–6 months before treatment to support hormonal balance and egg/sperm health, but acupuncture can be beneficial at any stage of the process.
How often should I have treatment?
Weekly or fortnightly sessions are common during preparation. Around embryo transfer, I usually recommend treatment before and after transfer, then weekly during the two-week wait.
Is acupuncture safe during IVF?
Yes. Acupuncture is considered safe when provided by a qualified practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. I always adapt treatments to your IVF stage and any advice from your fertility clinic.
Can acupuncture improve IVF success rates?
While acupuncture cannot guarantee pregnancy, research shows it may help support wellbeing, reduce stress, and promote relaxation — all key factors in reproductive health.
